Register For Tractor Safety Course, Soil Health Workshop
The Maine Farmers Resource Network would like to highlight two upcoming educational programs offered by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension:
This five-week course, which will be held at Topsham Tractor and Equipment in Topsham, starts on April 22.
Participants will learn how to handle tractors and equipment safely, how to identify hazards, and how to minimize the chances of accidents. The course is open to all adults and interested youth who will be 14 when the class begins. A Federal Certificate of Training will be issued at the end of the course after successful completion of the written test and driving course and with attendance requirements met. This certificate is required for 14- and 15-year-olds who plan to operate farm equipment for hire on farms other than their own.
Format:
- In-person lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and tractor driving
- Additional reading and coursework outside of class time. Note: Participants will need access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone to complete some homework assignments.
- Final written exam and driving test
The class meets from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, and 5/20.
Next Level Soil Health Workshop

Registration: $40 (Financial Assistance is Available Upon Request)
A full-day program focused on taking farm soil health practices to the next level. This program is for farmers who have experience with soil health practices and want to build on those outcomes and benefits. Topics will include;
- Improving cover crop stand success;
- Nutrient management with cover crops;
- Nutrient considerations with compost, manures and biochar;
- Interseeding cover crops;
- tractor scale reduced tillage.
- Time for sharing participant experiences and developing soil health plans.
