I need an ASSISTANT!
Are you the kind of person who washes the dishes after someone else did it first? This is the job for you!
Lakin’s Gorges Cheese has been a one woman operation since I started the business back in 2011… but it’s TIME to change that .
This work is not the most glamorous, but it’s the most important for assuring the highest quality of cheese is produced. The cheese molds are washed in an alkaline and acid detergent, so if your skin is very sensitive, this may not be a good position for you. We do wear stylish long gloves, rubber aprons and eye protection.
And then there’s cutting and wrapping the cheese for wholesale orders and nationwide shipping. You’ll learn how to judge the cheese at the peak of ripeness to sell. You’ll create invoices. You’ll assemble boxes of cheese on ice and schedule UPS.
I take food safety very seriously and you’ll need a set of clothes and rubber boots that are only worn at the creamery. Hair needs to be contained under a hat. If you have a beard, you’ll need to wear a beard net. No jewelry or perfume can be worn while working.
It’s frequently noisy, sometimes steamy, and you’re standing on concrete in rubber boots. But we can listen to audiobooks and funk music. And when you take a break, there are cows to visit.
Part time, 20 hours per week, $15/hour, plus cheese and meat allowance. Year round. If you’d also be interested in selling at the Monday and Friday farmers markets, more hours are possible. I’m vaccinated and boosted, and would like you to be, too, as this is a small space.
Located at East Forty Farm in Waldoboro, Maine.
